About Porto Piave Vecchia Lighthouse
Also known as: Porto Piave Vecchia (Jesolo, Iesolo)
This cylindrical stone tower, standing 48 meters tall, features gray and white horizontal bands. Its construction material is stone, and it is topped with a lantern and gallery. A three-story harbor control building is attached to the main structure. The original lighthouse was first lit in 1853, but was destroyed by German troops during World War II. The current lighthouse was built in 1950 and emits a white flash every 20 seconds. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for safe navigation into the Sile River entrance, a primary access route for vessels approaching Venice. Its location supports the Venice harbor master's office, aiding in the management of maritime traffic.
