About Pointe Saint-Gildas Lighthouse
Pointe Saint-Gildas Lighthouse, built in 1941, stands 17 meters high with its focal plane at 20 meters. The structure consists of a white three-story building topped with a green mast carrying the light. Initially, German troops mounted a light on the 1861 signal station during World War II. A permanent light was established by the Bureau des Phares et Balises in 1955. From 1938 until 1993, a square pyramidal concrete observation tower was situated on the building. The lighthouse emits a white, red, or green light with a geographic range of 13.2 nautical miles.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the southern entrance to the Loire estuary, guiding vessels. In 2005, the building was converted into a lighthouse and shipwreck museum.
