Pointe du Raz Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Pointe du Raz Lighthouse
Constructed in 1839, this stone lighthouse stands 17 meters tall with a cylindrical shape, featuring stone trim. The structure includes a square base, a gallery, and a large octagonal stone watch room attached to a one-story keeper's house. Although first lit in the same year it was built, the lighthouse became inactive in 1887. Its operational period concluded following the construction of the Phare de la Vieille, an offshore light. The French Navy later occupied the building as a facility, which has since closed. The site is now open to the public, but the tower remains inaccessible.
Why it matters: The lighthouse marks a historical transition in maritime navigation at Pointe du Raz, with its decommissioning highlighting the development of more effective aids in challenging seas and its subsequent use illustrating evolving strategic importance.
