Pointe de Kerdonis Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Pointe de Kerdonis Lighthouse
Built of stone in 1879, the Pointe de Kerdonis Lighthouse stands 14 meters tall on the easternmost point of Belle-Île. Its square, cylindrical masonry tower, topped with a lantern and gallery, rises from a 1-1/2 story stone keeper's house. The tower is painted white with unpainted stone trim. It emits a red flash every 15 seconds, visible for 16.2 nautical miles. The lighthouse is situated near Locmaria on the island's eastern tip. While the site is open to visitors, the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for guiding vessels around the easternmost point of Belle-Île, a potentially hazardous area for navigation. Its distinct red light helps define the island's perimeter for ships transiting the Bay of Biscay and approaching the Breton coast.
