About Plateau du Four Lighthouse
Also known as: Plateau du Four (Four du Croisic)
Constructed in 1822 from granite, the Plateau du Four lighthouse stands 23 meters tall. Its tower features a distinctive black and white spiral pattern and a cylindrical shape. The structure incorporates a lantern, gallery, and keeper's quarters. In 1846, its height was increased by 6.2 meters. The lighthouse is situated on a rocky shelf that submerges at high tide, located 3 kilometers west of Pointe du Croisic. It emits a white flash every five seconds, visible for 13.8 nautical miles.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for guiding vessels approaching the Loire River and warning them of the hazardous submerged rocks it marks. Its unique spiral coloration also makes it a rare and recognizable navigational landmark on this busy coastline.
