About Ohse Saki Lighthouse
Also known as: Ohse Saki (relocated)
The Ohse Saki Lighthouse is a cylindrical, white cast iron tower standing 15 meters tall. Originally built in 1879, it guided vessels from its post on the west end of Fukue Shima in Nagasaki Prefecture. The lighthouse featured an alternating red and white light. During World War II in 1945, its lantern roof sustained damage from gunfire. A modern lighthouse replaced its active service in 1971. The original tower was subsequently relocated to the Museum of Maritime Science in Tokyo.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's structure was prefabricated in France, and it survived damage from gunfire during World War II.
