Noboribetsu Kō Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Noboribetsu Kō Lighthouse
A red, cylindrical concrete tower stands 10 meters tall at the end of Noboribetsu's east breakwater. With a focal height of 16 meters, it emits a single red flash every 3 seconds, visible for 12.2 nautical miles. This structure, housing a lantern and gallery, was relocated around 2013 to accommodate an extension of the breakwater. The lighthouse guides vessels into the harbor of Noboribetsu, Japan, in the Hokkaido Prefecture. Although operational, the tower and site are closed to the public.
Why it matters: The relocation of this lighthouse reflects evolving port needs and coastal development. Its distinct red light clearly marks the harbor entrance, aiding maritime traffic flow and preventing groundings for vessels approaching the extended breakwater.
