About Nie Saki Lighthouse
Also known as: Nie Saki (Tsu)
Nie Saki Lighthouse is a square pyramidal concrete tower standing 8 meters tall on a stone base. Originally established in 1885 with a wooden structure, the current lighthouse was rebuilt in 1922 upon the original tapered stone foundation. The tower is white, and its focal height reaches 16 meters. Although the original lantern has been removed, the structure is operational and emits an isophase white light on an 8-second cycle, visible for 12.2 nautical miles. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is significant for guiding traditional shipping into the historic Tsumatsusaka port in Tsu, Japan. Its unique construction on the foundation of an earlier lighthouse demonstrates a rare continuity in navigational infrastructure.
