About Ōmozi Iwa Lighthouse
Established in 1895, Ōmozi Iwa Lighthouse is a cylindrical stone tower situated on a small islet at the western deepwater entrance to the Kanmon Strait. The tower stands 15 meters tall and displays a white light that flashes once every 3 seconds, visible for 11.9 nautical miles. Its location is about 5 kilometers northeast of Shira Su and 1 kilometer from Hibikinada port. The structure is painted white and features a lantern and gallery atop its conical stone form. This lighthouse has served mariners navigating the northern approach to the busy Kanmon Strait for over a century.
Why it matters: Ōmozi Iwa Lighthouse is indispensable for vessels entering the Kanmon Strait from the north, guiding them through the deepwater channel and helping them navigate complex currents. The strongly conical stone tower also represents a distinctive architectural style for Japanese lighthouses of its era.
