About Mönkeberg Deviationsbake Lighthouse
Built in 1886, the Mönkeberg Deviationsbake is a square skeletal tower standing 72.5 meters tall, located on a hilltop off Dorfstraße in western Mönkeberg. It features two galleries; the upper gallery is fitted with a triangular slatted daymark, and the lower gallery displays a square slatted daymark. This structure was established to assist mariners in calibrating ship's compasses, a task completed in conjunction with a series of smaller nearby beacons. Ships navigating the Kieler Förde could use these visual references for precise adjustments to account for magnetic deviation. The tower remained operational for over a century before being deactivated in 1988.
Why it matters: The Mönkeberg Deviationsbake is significant for its specialized function in compass calibration, aiding navigation on the Kieler Förde by allowing crews to correct for magnetic deviation.
