About Butjadingen West Coast Lighthouses Lighthouse
This square pyramidal skeletal tower, built of steel in 1962, stands 37 meters tall and is painted red. It features a gallery and a thin funnel-shaped topmark. The structure served as the upper light for a southbound range, guiding ships into Wilhelmshaven on the east side of the Jade. It was the successor to a light first established in 1914. The lighthouse ceased operations in 2012, at which point it was replaced by the Jappensand Range.
Why it matters: Its function as an upper range light was specifically to guide vessels into the port of Wilhelmshaven, a significant naval and commercial center.
