Mitarai Kō Breakwater Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Mitarai Kō Breakwater Lighthouse
This square, tapered stone tower stands 8.5 meters tall, with its light positioned 13 meters above sea level. Built in 1940, it features a distinctive crown designed to resemble a pagoda. The lighthouse emits an isophase green light on a 6-second cycle, visible for 11.3 nautical miles. It is situated at the elbow of the breakwater mole in Mitarai, a town on Osaki Shimo-jima island. The structure's design intentionally incorporates elements of traditional Japanese stone lanterns. While the site is open to visitors, the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: Its unique architectural design, mimicking a traditional Japanese stone lantern, makes it a cultural landmark. The light guides vessels navigating into the harbor, marking the breakwater's end.
