About Minatonishi Breakwater Lighthouse
Also known as: Minatonishi Breakwater (Sukki Kō)
The Minatonishi Breakwater lighthouse is a red, cylindrical concrete tower standing 11 meters tall, with its light at a focal height of 15 meters. It emits a single red flash every three seconds, visible for nearly 12 nautical miles. The structure features a round hourglass shape, complete with a lantern and gallery. Located at the termination of the south breakwater, it serves Sukki, a small port situated about 1.2 kilometers south of Cape Motta. The site of the lighthouse is accessible to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for the small port of Sukki, specifically guiding local fishing boats and other maritime traffic safely past the end of the south breakwater. Its distinctive hourglass-shaped concrete tower makes it a unique architectural landmark in the region.
