About Mesquer Lighthouse
Also known as: Mesquer (Pointe de Merquel)
The Mesquer light stands on the jetty at Pointe de Merquel, marking the southern entrance to the Marais Salants estuary. First lit in 1920, the current structure is a 7-meter post attached to a one-story equipment room. Its light emits occulting white, red, and green signals on a 4-second cycle. The original lighthouse was damaged during World War II, with a temporary light used from the ruins post-war until a new structure was built. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This light guides vessels through the entrance to the Marais Salants estuary, with its directional signals indicating safe channels in the shallow waters.
