About Ōma Kō West Breakwater Lighthouse
Built in 1961, the Ōma Kō West Breakwater light is a red concrete cylindrical post measuring 9.5 meters in height, affixed to a 1-story concrete equipment building. Its light source is positioned 13 meters above sea level. The light displays an occulting red characteristic (Oc R 6s) and can be seen up to 11.3 nautical miles. Located on the western breakwater of the Ōma fishing harbor, it is distinct from the modern ferry terminal. Access to the site is permitted, but the tower is not open for tours.
Why it matters: This light serves as a navigation aid, marking the harbor entrance for ships approaching and departing the traditional Ōma port and indicating the safe passage channel.
