About Limón Lighthouse
Also known as: #Limón (Isla Uvita, Isla Quiribrí)
Built in 1891, this square skeletal lighthouse stood 25 meters tall and was painted white. Components were prefabricated in London and assembled on an island about 3 kilometers east of Puerto Limón. The lighthouse served as the traditional landfall light for vessels approaching the port. The island it occupied also had a history as a quarantine site for smallpox patients from 1881 into the 1920s. The Northern Railway Company assumed control of the station in 1930, followed by JAPDEVA in 1964. Despite its historical role, the lighthouse has since been removed and no longer exists.
Why it matters: As the traditional landfall light for Puerto Limón, this lighthouse was instrumental in guiding ships into the port. Its privately funded construction, with prefabricated parts shipped from London, represents an interesting aspect of early maritime infrastructure development.
