About Lees Scar Lighthouse
Also known as: Lees Scar (Tommy Legs)
Built in 1841, Lees Scar Lighthouse is a square pyramidal skeletal tower standing 11 meters tall. It emits a green light with one flash every 10 seconds, visible for nearly 11 nautical miles. The structure features a lantern mounted atop the skeletal tower. This lighthouse was deactivated from 1938 until 1959, when it was reactivated. The tower's lower section previously served as the foundation for an earlier cottage lighthouse. The site is managed by the Port of Silloth and is located about 700 meters from the nearest port.
Why it matters: Lees Scar Lighthouse is recognized as a historic and endangered light, highlighting its cultural value and the need for preservation. Its evolution from a cottage lighthouse to its current skeletal form also marks a unique architectural development.
