About Île Penfret Lighthouse
Constructed in 1837, this square masonry tower rises 24 meters from a one-story keeper's house on the Île Penfret, the largest island in the Archipel des Glénan. Its lantern and gallery are painted red, complementing the white structure. The light emits a single red flash every 5 seconds from a focal height of 36 meters, visible for over 16 nautical miles. The lighthouse is situated about 18 kilometers south-southwest of Concarneau. Restoration and maintenance efforts by the preservation group Plein Phare sur Penfret began in 2012.
Why it matters: This active light is essential for navigating the Archipel des Glénan, a significant hazard off the Brittany coast, warning vessels of numerous shoals and rocks.
