Île d'Aix Lighthouse

About Île d'Aix Lighthouse
The Île d'Aix lighthouse, built of stone in 1889, stands on the walls of a fortress at the island's southern tip. This cylindrical stone tower, 17 meters high, was first lit in 1821. A second, twin tower was constructed in 1906 to the west-northwest, featuring a curved red screen. The combined structure emits a white or red light, flashing white and red every 5 seconds. Restoration efforts in 2013 addressed structural issues and updated the optical system. The lighthouse complex is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse assists navigation through the Pertuis d'Antioche, a strait important for coastal traffic. Its dual-tower design, including a directional red sector, offers precise guidance to vessels.
