About Kōwa Kō South Breakwater Lighthouse
A red concrete post lighthouse, 8.5 meters in height, was first lit in 1962. The structure includes a 1-story concrete equipment room and is painted entirely red. It stands 10 meters above sea level, emitting a flashing red light every 5 seconds with a geographic range of 10.4 nautical miles. Located at the end of the south breakwater at Kōwa Kō, it marks the river entrance on its south side and the northern edge of the modern harbor. The lighthouse is positioned about 0.5 km from the port of Kowa and is situated on the east side of the Chita Peninsula.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is critical for the safe navigation of vessels entering and departing Kōwa Kō, warning mariners of the south breakwater's presence and extent.
