About Killyleagh Lighthouse
Also known as: Killyleagh (Town Rock)
This cylindrical red brick tower, standing 8 meters tall, was built in 2011 and first lit that same year. Located in Stangford Lough approximately 250 meters from Killyleagh, it emits two white, red, or green flashes every 5 seconds. The lighthouse stands on a foundation built in the 19th century, which originally served as a daymark and was occasionally lit by fires. The modern directional light installed in 2011 guides vessels through the lough. The site is accessible, but the tower itself is closed to visitors.
Why it matters: The lighthouse provides specific directional guidance within Stangford Lough through its shifting light colors and flash patterns. Its upgrade in 2011 modernized a structure with a history dating back to the 19th century.
