A cylindrical white concrete tower with a lantern and gallery, standing 15.5 meters tall, was built in 1971. It is attached to a one-story service building. The light emits a single white flash every five seconds from a focal height of 50 meters, with a geographic range of 18.7 nautical miles. This lighthouse is situated on Ryuzu Saki, a hilly promontory marking the southwest side of the entrance to Kōchi's harbor. The port of Kōchi is the principal port on the south side of Shikoku island, utilizing a large estuary for its harbor.
Why it matters: The Kōchi Lighthouse marks the entrance to the city's large estuary harbor, a critical point for vessels approaching the primary port of Shikoku's southern coast.
