About Kamaishi Kō Lighthouse
A red, cylindrical concrete tower 15 meters in height, Kamaishi Kō lighthouse was built in 2016. It stands at the southern end of the north breakwater for Kamaishi, located 1.5 kilometers from the city's port. The lighthouse emits a red light with two flashes every six seconds, visible for 13.8 nautical miles. This structure replaced a previous lighthouse destroyed by the 2011 tsunami. The focal height of the light is 23 meters above sea level.
Why it matters: The current lighthouse, established in 2016 after its predecessor was destroyed by the 2011 tsunami, marks the north breakwater of Kamaishi Port. Its construction signifies the region's recovery and provides navigational guidance for vessels entering this industrial port.
