Isola del Tino Lighthouse

Fl🇮🇹Portovenere, ITOperational

Also known as: Isola del Tino (Faro San Venerio)

Constructed in 1840, the Isola del Tino lighthouse stands as a cylindrical stone tower, 13 meters in height, with an attached two-story keeper's house. The structure featured a gallery, though its lantern has since been removed. It was first lit in 1840 and its light had a geographic range of 26.6 nautical miles. The lighthouse emitted three white flashes every 15 seconds. Its operational period was brief; it was deactivated in 1884 and superseded by a taller tower built nearby. The original tower, now inactive, is located on a wedge-shaped island off the western entrance to the Golfo della Spezia.

Why it matters: The early replacement of this lighthouse illustrates the ongoing need for improved navigational aids in busy shipping lanes and marked the western approach to the harbor of La Spezia.
