Location & Light Range
About Isla La Plata Lighthouse
A white, triangular skeletal steel tower stands 28 meters tall on Isla La Plata, with its light at a focal height of 189 meters. This structure establishes a white light that flashes once every 10 seconds, visible for nearly 33 nautical miles. The island, a mountainous natural area and bird sanctuary, lies 16 km offshore and 25 km southwest of Cabo San Lorenzo. Skeletal towers have marked this location since the 1930s, with the current light and tower established around 2000, replacing earlier installations dating back to 1888. The lighthouse is situated near the northwestern tip of the island.
Why it matters: This light is important for vessels navigating the waters off Ecuador's coast, warning them of the isolated Isla La Plata.
