About Ishinomaki Gyoko West Breakwater Lighthouse
This 10-meter red concrete cylindrical tower, first lit in 1976, stands on a detached breakwater off the Ishinomaki waterfront in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It features a 1-story concrete equipment shelter, also painted red, to which the cylindrical post is attached. The light emits a red flash every 3 seconds, visible for 11.3 nautical miles. The structure is located 1.2 kilometers from the port of Watanoha. Despite its modest size, the lighthouse survived the regional tsunami.
Why it matters: Marking the end of a detached breakwater, this lighthouse is essential for guiding fishing vessels and commercial traffic into the busy Ishinomaki port, aiding in the prevention of groundings and collisions.
