About Hyyppänmäki Lighthouse
Also known as: Hyyppänmäki (Keskiniemi Range Rear)
This lighthouse, established as a daybeacon in 1874, began operating as a lit aid in 1937. The current structure, a triangular cylindrical skeletal tower with a gallery, stands 23 meters tall and was built in 1987. Its design features a black tower with a single white horizontal band. Originally located on a sand ridge 7 kilometers southeast of a former front light, the station's rear light was discontinued in 1997. The geographic range of its light was 13.6 nautical miles. While no longer active as a primary navigation light, the site remains open to the public, though the tower is closed.
Why it matters: The former rear light played a role in establishing safe navigational ranges for ships around Hailuoto. Its evolution reflects changes in maritime technology, now serving as a daybeacon with radar antennas.
