About Hörnum Unterfeuer Lighthouse
Also known as: Hörnum Unterfeuer (lantern)
The Hörnum Unterfeuer was a cylindrical lighthouse built in 1924 on the island of Sylt. Its tower measured 7 meters in height and was painted red with a single white horizontal band. This front range lighthouse guided vessels navigating the waters off the southern part of the island. Severe beach erosion during a storm in March 1979 caused the structure to be overthrown. The lighthouse was replaced in 1924 and became inactive in 1979. Its lantern was salvaged and is now on display.
Why it matters: The Hörnum Unterfeuer served as a front range light, essential for guiding ships through the difficult waters south of Sylt. Its loss due to coastal erosion highlights the ongoing impact of natural forces on coastal infrastructure.
