About Hourtin Lighthouse
Also known as: Hourtin (Tour Sud)
Hourtin lighthouse, constructed of red brick with stone trim, was built in 1863. The square tower stands 23 meters tall, with its light positioned at a focal height of 55 meters, providing a geographic range of 21 nautical miles. Originally intended to mark the dark coast between the Gironde estuary and the Bassin d'Arcachon, it was deactivated in 1894. The tower was reactivated in 1964 as a satellite tracking station. The structure is now topped by two parabolic antennas and other communications equipment, and its site is closed to the public.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was essential for navigating the featureless coast between the Gironde estuary and the Bassin d'Arcachon. Its subsequent repurposing as a satellite tracking station highlights the enduring strategic value of its location.
