About Hino Shima Lighthouse
This 9.5-meter red concrete post lighthouse was built and first lit in 1959. It stands at the tip of a promontory that marks the south entrance to the passage between Amakusa Kami Shima and Hino Shima. The structure includes a lantern atop the post, and is attached to a square, one-story concrete equipment shelter, with the entire structure painted red. It emits a single red flash every 6 seconds, visible for 10.4 nautical miles. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is indispensable for safe navigation through the passage between Amakusa Kami Shima and Hino Shima, warning ships of the promontory at the channel's southern entrance.
