Haya Saki Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Haya Saki Lighthouse
The former Haya Saki lighthouse was a round, tapered concrete tower built in 1972 on the northeastern point of Yakushima. It guided vessels through the Yakushima Strait, a significant maritime passage. The white structure served as a landmark for mariners for nearly forty years. Its operational service ended in 2010, and the tower was later demolished. Although the original tower is no longer standing, its preserved lantern now rests on a stone base at the site, serving as a memorial.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was essential for guiding ships safely through the Yakushima Strait, a busy maritime corridor. Its unique legacy lies in the preservation of its original lantern, which now serves as a public memorial on a stone base.
