About Hakata Kō Lighthouse
Established in 1939, this lighthouse stood on the east side of an island at the end of Hakata harbor's main breakwater. The structure consisted of an 8.5-meter white concrete post attached to a single-story concrete equipment room. Its light guided vessels into the harbor for decades. The lighthouse was deactivated in March 2020 and subsequently removed by the end of that year. It was located 1.1 kilometers from Hakatashima.
Why it matters: This structure marked the end of Hakata harbor's main breakwater, aiding navigation for ships entering the port.
