About Fier d'Ars Feu Postérieur Lighthouse
Also known as: Fier d'Ars Feu Postérieur (Trousse-Chemise)
This square, masonry structure was built in 1875 on the north side of Ars-en-Ré. It comprises a two-story keeper's house with an integrated square tower from which the light was shown. The Fier d'Ars Feu Postérieur guided vessels through a local channel, a task that required its relocation at least twice due to shifting sands and currents. The light ceased operation in 2007. In 2020, the lower floor of the building was restored.
Why it matters: The multiple relocations of this light highlight the navigational challenges of dynamic coastal channels, and its integration into a keeper's house represents a distinct architectural approach.
