About Falmouth Area Lighthouses Lighthouse
This cylindrical stone lighthouse was built in 1835 on St. Anthony's Head, marking the eastern entrance to Carrick Roads, the harbor of Falmouth. The 19-meter tower, painted white, features an octagonal base and is topped with a lantern and gallery. It is attached to a two-story keeper's house and utilizes a 1st order Fresnel lens. The light emits a white flash, with a red sector indicating the direction of Manacles Rocks. The lighthouse has a geographic range of 13.6 nautical miles and is operational. An outbuilding, Sally Port Cottage, has been converted for holiday rentals.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is indispensable for maritime traffic entering and exiting Carrick Roads. Its distinctive red sector warns mariners of the Manacles Rocks, a known hazard.
