About Estaca de Bares Lighthouse
Completed in 1850, the Estaca de Bares lighthouse stands on the northernmost point of Spain, marking the boundary between the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay. This octagonal stone tower, measuring 10 meters in height, is attached to a two-story keeper's house complex. Its birdcage-style lantern emits a white light, producing a single white flash every 7.5 seconds from a focal height of 101 meters. The lighthouse is situated at the end of a 5 km long peninsula in Mañón, Galicia. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse was ordered in 1846 to illuminate the northwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, serving as a key navigational marker for traffic between the Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay.
