About Eastbourne District Lighthouses Lighthouse
This octagonal concrete tower, built in 1971, stands on a large cylindrical column in the English Channel. It is painted white with a single red horizontal band. The structure supported a lantern and included keeper's quarters, with a helipad also incorporated. The lighthouse automated in 1994. Its light was extinguished on March 21, 2022, and the structure was removed in 2023. The tower was saved and donated to the Bexhill Maritime Coastal Environment Centre.
Why it matters: Established to mark the Royal Sovereign Shoal, this station replaced a lightship that began service in 1875. The tower's preservation ensures a piece of maritime engineering history remains accessible.
