About Chioggia Lighthouse
Also known as: Chioggia (Forte San Felice)
The octagonal stone tower at the Porto di Chioggia entrance was built in 1868 and first lit in the same year. It is mounted on an 18th-century fort, Forte San Felice, which historically guarded the approach to Chioggia. The lighthouse tower, which features a gallery, has been inactive since 1996. Its lantern has since been removed, leaving the structure without its original illuminating equipment. The fort itself, though originally a significant defensive structure for the port city, is now in disrepair.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's placement on the 18th-century Forte San Felice highlights the historical integration of coastal defense and navigational aids at the Porto di Chioggia entrance.
