About Chihase Kō Lighthouse
Chihase Kō is a red, cylindrical concrete tower standing 11 meters tall, topped with a lantern and gallery. It is situated at the extremity of the west breakwater for Chihase fishing port, approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Cape Motta. The light emits a single red flash every three seconds from a focal height of 14 meters, with a geographic range of 11.6 nautical miles. This structure guides vessels entering the port from the sea. The site is open to visitors, although the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for the local fishing fleet, providing a critical red flash every three seconds to guide them safely into Chihase fishing port, especially during low visibility or night operations. Its location at the end of the west breakwater ensures clear demarcation of the harbor entrance, preventing groundings and facilitating efficient navigation for all vessels utilizing this busy coastal hub.
