About Chichester District Lightbeacons Lighthouse
The Chichester District Lightbeacon stands 10 meters tall, with its focal plane at 14 meters. Its pyramidal structure, painted with a yellow upper half and a black lower half, is supported by braces at its base. This post-type beacon marks a limestone reef approximately 1.6 kilometers off Selsey Bill, east-southeast of Portsmouth. It emits a white light with a single flash every 15 seconds, visible for 11.6 nautical miles. The reef it marks was once a visible hazard but has largely submerged due to historical limestone quarrying. While the site is open to the public, the structure itself is closed and accessible only by boat.
Why it matters: This lightbeacon warns vessels of the submerged Mixon limestone reef, an obstacle that became significantly more dangerous after extensive historical quarrying led to its submergence, ensuring safer passage near Selsey Bill.
