Constructed in 1855, the Capo Grecale Lighthouse stands on the northeastern tip of Lampedusa, Italy's southernmost island. The lighthouse consists of an octagonal concrete tower, painted white, which rises 19 meters from the seaward side of a single-story keeper's house. It is equipped with a lantern and gallery. The focal height of the light is 82 meters, and it emits a white flash every 5 seconds, visible for 22.9 nautical miles. The site is open to visitors, though the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is Italy's southernmost light, marking the northeastern headland of Lampedusa and guiding maritime traffic in the central Mediterranean.
