About Britische Leuchttürme auf historischen Postkarten Lighthouse
Constructed from stone in 1673, this octagonal cylindrical tower stands 24 meters tall and is painted white. Located on Flamborough Head in the East Riding of Yorkshire, it overlooks the North Sea between Flamborough Head and the Humber estuary. Although designed as a lighthouse, it was never activated and instead functioned as a daybeacon for over a century. The structure, built of white chalk, was restored in 1996. The Friends of the Chalk Tower were established in 2012 to manage and open the site for public visits.
Why it matters: This tower is significant as a well-preserved seventeenth-century structure designed as a lighthouse but never lit, representing early navigational practices before powered lights. It also holds local heritage interest due to preservation efforts.
