Aonae Kō Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Aonae Kō Lighthouse
The Aonae Kō lighthouse was constructed in 1974 as a cylindrical concrete tower, 11 meters in height, painted red. Its design featured a round hourglass shape topped with a lantern and gallery. This structure originally marked the end of the main breakwater for Aonae harbor. For forty years, it emitted a green light, showing a single flash every six seconds. In 2014, the lighthouse was deactivated and later demolished.
Why it matters: The lighthouse guided vessels into Aonae harbor and its hourglass-shaped tower served as a distinct visual reference for mariners. Its demolition reflects the modernization of maritime infrastructure.
