About Akkeshi Town Lighthouses Lighthouse
The Akkeshi Town Lighthouse stands on the southern end of Daikoku Shima island, marking the entrance to Akkeshi Bay. This cylindrical concrete tower, standing 8 meters tall, was first lit in 1890 as a wooden structure. The current lighthouse, a white concrete cylinder topped with a lantern and attached to a single-story equipment room, replaced the original. The focal height of the light reaches 112 meters, casting a white flash every 10 seconds. Access to the island is restricted due to its status as a protected nature preserve and bird sanctuary, meaning the lighthouse and grounds are closed to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is important for safe navigation into Akkeshi Bay, guiding vessels past the island's natural features within a protected environmental area.
