About Akasaki Kō Lighthouse
This white concrete post lighthouse was built and first lit in 1977. Standing 8.5 meters tall with a focal height of 11 meters, it is situated at the end of the east breakwater in Akasaki. The structure includes a single-story concrete equipment room. It emits a green occulting light, showing for two seconds followed by a two-second eclipse, with a geographic range of 10.7 nautical miles. The lighthouse is located on the north coast of Kami Shima, near the port of Kohtsuura.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the eastern breakwater, guiding vessels safely into and out of Akasaki harbor and preventing them from striking the harbor entrance structure.
