Three ships were struck near the Strait of Hormuz on July 7. Iran carried out the attacks, US officials said. One ship caught fire off Oman; all crew were safe. The Qatari LNG tanker Al Rekayyat was among those hit, and so was the Saudi crude supertanker Wedyan. Both continued under way.
US Central Command launched "powerful strikes" against Iran in response later that day. Washington also revoked the licence that had allowed Iranian oil to be sold abroad.
The UK's Maritime Trade Operations unit raised the threat level in the Strait of Hormuz to "severe" after the attacks, according to a UKMTO advisory. Shipping operators in the area were asked to take extra precautions.
