About Zhágǎng Lighthouse
This concrete, cylindrical lighthouse was built and first lit in 1959. It stands 13 meters tall, with its focal height also at 13 meters. The tower is painted with vertical red and white stripes and features a lantern and gallery. Located in Shanghai's Minhang District, it is situated on the east side of the Huángpǔ River estuary, approximately 35 kilometers south of downtown Shanghai. This position marks a right-angle bend in the river, within a coal loading facility.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is essential for guiding vessels around a sharp bend in the Huángpǔ River, a navigationally challenging point for commercial traffic.
