About Xiǎoqīngdǎo Lighthouse
Also known as: Xiǎoqīngdǎo (Little Qīngdǎo, Tsingtao, Arcona Island)
The Xiǎoqīngdǎo Lighthouse, first lit in 1900, is situated on a small island off the southern coast of Qīngdǎo city. Its current two-stage tower, built of stone and cast iron, stands 15.5 meters tall with the light at a focal height of 28 meters. The lower octagonal stone section was erected in 1904, while the upper round cast iron portion was added in 1915 following repairs. The lighthouse was heavily damaged in 1914 during the Siege of Qingdao. It emits a red flash every 6.5 seconds and has a geographic range of 14.9 nautical miles. The site is accessible to the public, but the tower is closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's unique construction, blending octagonal stone and round cast iron, reflects its historical development. It provides navigational guidance for vessels in the waters near Qīngdǎo.
