About Vakalapudi Lighthouse
This white, cylindrical masonry tower stands 28 meters tall and was built in 1879. The lighthouse is located in Vakalapudi, about 12 kilometers north of Kakinada, and marks the entrance to Kakinada Bay. Although the station was established in 1868, the current structure dates from 1879. Its light, which produced three white flashes every 15 seconds, was first lit in 2005 and the lighthouse became inactive that same year. The lantern has been removed from the tower. While the site is open to visitors, the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's preservation in 2003, despite earlier demolition plans, highlights its local historical value, and it marks a key navigational point for maritime traffic entering Kakinada Bay.
