Sunk Rock Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Sunk Rock Lighthouse
Constructed in 1884, the Sunk Rock Lighthouse is a 22-meter cylindrical stone tower standing 20 meters above sea level. It is painted in a red and yellow checkerboard pattern and features a round tower with a gallery mounted on a stone pier. The lighthouse emits two white flashes followed by red flashes every six seconds, a pattern that previously served as a warning and navigational aid. Its lantern was removed by 2010. Located about 5.8 km from Mumbai, it lies approximately 2.5 km southeast of the Gateway of India.
Why it matters: The lighthouse marks the Sunk Rock, a submerged hazard near Mumbai's busy shipping lanes. It also serves as a turnaround point for swimming races held between the lighthouse and the Gateway of India.
