About Ratnagiri Lighthouse
Also known as: Ratnagiri (Rathnagiri)
A cylindrical masonry tower, 15 meters high, stands at 102 meters above sea level on the south side of Ratnagiri harbor, within the walls of Ratnagiri Fort. The tower, painted with black and white horizontal bands, features a red lantern dome and was built in 1965. It emits a white light with a single flash every 10 seconds, visible for 25.1 nautical miles. The current structure replaced an earlier skeletal tower from 1940. The lighthouse is open to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse guides ships into Ratnagiri harbor, a significant port on India's west coast, and its position within the historic Ratnagiri Fort underscores the location's long-standing strategic importance.
